This classic Salisbury steak recipe features juicy, tender beef patties smothered in a rich, flavorful gravy with mushrooms and onions. Perfect for a cozy dinner, this meal is quick, hearty, and packed with deliciousness.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Scale

For the Hamburger Patties:

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 1 large egg

  • ½ cup panko breadcrumbs

  • 2 tablespoons A1 steak sauce

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tablespoon ketchup

  • 1 tablespoon homemade steak seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1 tablespoon butter

For the Gravy:

  • 3 tablespoons butter

  • 1 medium onion, sliced thin

  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 2 ½ cups beef broth (or stock)

  • Salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste

  • 8 oz sliced baby Bella mushrooms

Instructions

1. Prepare the Hamburger Patties:

In a medium bowl, mix together ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, A1 steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, steak seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder. Use your hands (or wear gloves) to combine all ingredients thoroughly. Form the mixture into 4 round patties about ¾ to 1 inch thick.

2. Cook the Patties:

Melt butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Once the butter is melted, add the patties to the skillet. Cook for about 5 minutes on each side until the patties are golden brown and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside, covering with foil to keep warm.

3. Make the Gravy:

In the same skillet, if there’s more than a tablespoon of grease left, discard the excess. Leave about 1 tablespoon of grease for flavor. Add butter to the skillet, scraping up any bits from the bottom of the pan. Add the onions and cook for about 5 minutes until softened and translucent.

4. Add Flour & Broth:

Stir in the flour and cook for 2 minutes, allowing it to brown lightly. Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

5. Add Mushrooms & Finish Cooking:

Add sliced mushrooms and the cooked patties back into the skillet. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 7 to 10 minutes until the mushrooms are tender and the gravy is thickened to your liking.

Notes

  • Storage: Leftover Salisbury steak can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. To freeze, store it in a freezer bag for up to 3 months.

  • Reheating: Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop with a little extra beef broth to keep the gravy from drying out.

  • Make-Ahead Tips: You can prepare the patties up to 2 days in advance and store them in the fridge. If you need to make the dish ahead of time, you can cook it, then keep it on low heat, adding more broth as necessary to prevent it from drying out.
